Can acidic foods cause me to age faster?

A high dietary acid load may contribute to the aging process. Diets heavy in acid-forming foods — concentrated animal protein, refined grains, and processed foods — and light in alkalizing fruits and vegetables push the body to draw on its mineral reserves to buffer the extra acid over time.

Research links a higher dietary acid load (often measured as PRAL) with greater loss of muscle and bone and more low-grade inflammation as we age — all hallmarks of accelerated aging. The encouraging news: shifting toward more alkalizing, mineral-rich plant foods is one of the simplest ways to ease that burden.
