Activated CoQ10 is in the active form (ubiquinol) of CoQ10 which gives it superior bioavailability. Studies have shown that the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 is much more effective at improving nutrient status in the body when compared to the ubiquinone form. This is important because it becomes more difficult for us to convert ubiquinone (inactive form) to ubiquinol (active form) as we age. In a randomized controlled trial, participants were given 200mg of CoQ10 per day, either in the ubiquinol or the ubiquinone form. In the ubiquinol group, plasma levels were 40% higher than the ubiquionone group after 2 weeks of supplementation.
The ubiquinol supplement led to at least a 1-fold increase in 7 subjects, while the ubiquinone only did so in 2 subjects. (3)
